If you could do one thing for yourself every day, what would you do?
We’ve been working with a great organization called IDONTMIND. A few months ago, we featured their work in one of our newsletters and on our blog. The organization began just one year ago with a mission to destigmatize mental illness and encourage people suffering to reach out and ask for help. This past year, IDONTMIND has raised over $250,000.
Their most recent t-shirt uses their familiar message and mantra “IDONTMIND” designed in the shape of a number 1. Released just as the group celebrated its one year anniversary, it also references statistics that cite 1 in 4 people will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime. On their website, the “1 Tee” is opposite a reminder, “Do 1 thing for your mental health every day.”
We think that’s a great way to start your day. Recently, a writer for JenReviews.com reached out and asked us to share an article that gives some suggestions are overcoming mental health challenges: A Blueprint When Feeling Blue: How A Mental Health Diagnosis Can Be Empowering. The article is written by a young woman who relates her own journey through mental illness diagnosis and healing.
“For me, it was empowering and validating to be reminded that I was not alone. Like I said earlier, 40 million adults in the United States have a mental health condition. And there are forums on the internet, and sometimes in-person support groups, for many different mental health conditions where you can connect with other who are finding solutions. The more you know about the root of your distress, the more power you will have to manage the symptoms and make your own choice about the best next step. Mental health professionals can help with the evidence based guidance – but we are not experts on you – you are!”
Have you thought about the question that started this article? Here’s a few things the staff of Scrappy came up with:
- Call my mom
- Buy new shoes
- Read a good book
- Be with friends
- Eat cake
Make your own list and see how much better you feel.
